Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Leader and State Executive as National Guard Arrive in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic party.

Trump's statements coincide with the deployment of National Guard troops in the Chicago region following directives from the current government, notwithstanding strong objections from Illinois authorities including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I'm not going put."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, declaring: "I refuse to back down. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the road toward full-blown autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, military units from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base roughly 50 miles from Chicago, as the federal government pushes forward with its hardline crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", despite police data indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, including homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 state military personnel preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Officials indicated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would secure ICE officers and their facilities.

Military personnel in combat attire with state guard insignia were observed at the military facility in Elwood. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off sanitation facilities and essential items. Trailers were arranged in lines. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities imposed flight restrictions over the military base for security reasons until early December.

The administration has intensified immigration enforcement in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering demonstrations, particularly near an immigration center in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit targeting the federal government, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "illegal and risky".

Legal proceedings on their case is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an executive order on that day banning federal immigration agents and related personnel from using municipal facilities as staging areas for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has accused Trump of using troops as "staged tools" and "pawns".

At a news conference on Tuesday, he said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and make acceptable the deployment of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The historic federal law limits the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. Yet, the president has stated he would be prepared to activate the Insurrection Act, which allows a commander-in-chief to send regular army in regions that are unable to suppress an uprising or are defying federal law.

After beginning his second term, Trump has dispatched or mentioned sending military units to at least 10 cities, such as Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the military presence is necessary to combat crime and protect ICE officers.

Statistics shows that serious offenses across the US has declined in recent years. In the city, for example, homicides were reduced 31% to under three hundred through late summer, per police data.

A recent poll published on that day found that most Americans oppose the deployment of military forces without an external threat.
